Health Screening Tests For Disease Prevention: Good Or Bad?

Health Screening Tests

Taking proper care of your body is not just eating healthy. Eating healthy, avoiding substances that are harmful and exercising are all excellent examples of living a healthy lifestyle. Most people will, however, over look this component of healthy living and that would be having health screening tests done. Many diseases have spread due to the lack of care that people have put into prevention. Go to your doctor to see what you need to do to be up-to-date on prevention. You may have to get immunizations done that should have been done years ago. It is better late than never to take care of your body.

What are health screening tests for? Screening is known as an exam on your body or a test that is performed before any symptoms of an illness begin. These tests are intended to find a disease or illness early before it is too late to cure it. Different tests are done on each person depending on age, race, family genetics, gender, and overall health. Mammograms are often performed on women to check for lumps in the breast that could lead to breast cancer. Blood may be drawn to make sure a person doesn't have the early signs of diabetes, thyroid disease, or any other illness that can be tracked by blood.

Health Screening Tests

Keep in mind that with everything good in life there is usually something that could go wrong. The same is true with health screening tests. Have you ever heard of a false positive? A false positive is when a test comes back positive (and remember that in the medical world a positive is not what you want, unless you are planning a pregnancy) and the person actually does not have anything wrong with them. Machines are not perfect and neither are doctors. Everybody is human and no human on the earth at this day and age is perfect. The harm in false positives is that the person that had just been diagnosed with this disease is not filled with anxiety. With the anxiety comes stress. With stress comes loss of sleep, leading to a weak immune system, and then allows an opening for an actual illness or disease to attack! If you get a positive on any screening or prevention tests make sure you seek a second opinion BEFORE you panic! The tests are very sensitive and can find a disease or illness, or the traces of them, in almost any healthy person. The problem with this is the person will be medicated and not really need to be. You body will most likely become addicted to any drugs that you start to give it and you will have to dish out money every so often to pay for your meds.

On the other hand, if you are seriously feeling ill or "off" contact your physician to have health screening tests. You never know what they might find. You could just be coming down with the common cold, or it could be the beginning of what could have been a very bad disease. Catching any disease or illness in the early stages makes it easier to treat and the recovery is usually faster. Remember to not go ahead with any treatments before you seek a second opinion. Going through with any medical procedures costs great deals of money and you might not actually have to spend the money if there is nothing actually wrong.
